ARTIST PROFILE

The Chamber Singers of Algoma

This year marks the 21st anniversary of The Chamber Singers of Algoma. Founded by conductor and organist Patty Gartshore in 1985, the choir draws together some thirty-five amateur and trained musicians from the Sault twin cities. Sharing a passion for choral music and a dedication to excellence, the vocal ensemble has established a major presence in the cultural life of the community.

In 1989 and again in 2002, the group was invited to sing at the International Choral Festival in Toronto. In 2001, members of the ensemble joined the Precious Blood Cathedral Choir for a series of concerts in Rome and the Vatican, as well as at the Canadian Embassy. In 2004 the Chamber Singers traveled to the Czech Republic at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture to sing at the 47th International Choir Festival.

On the local scene, the group has enjoyed repeated collaborations with the Sault Symphony Orchestra, most notably the Superior Celebrations in 1993. This PBS Television special of Handel’s Messiah was broadcast over 200 stations across North America. The Algoma Fall Festival has been another special partner of the Chamber Singers. They have been invited to be part of that cultural celebration many times over the past 20 years.
