ARTIST PROFILE

Daniel Golden has been a faculty member of the Algoma Music Camp since 1989. Trained at the University of Chicago and at Indiana University, Dan was principal violist of Orchestra London, Canada for 25 years and founder and leader of the Hot Latkes Klezmer Band.

Dani is now a busy freelance musician, and string teacher in Chicago. He is Principal Violist of the Lake Forest Symphony, and  performs regularily with the Ars Viva Symphony, Chicagoland Pops Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic and numerous other professional orchestras and chamber ensembles in the Chicago area.  Dan is on the faculty of the Merit School of Music in Chicago, the Lake Forest Symphony School and teaches violin and viola privately. 

Dan performs Jewish and other ethnic music on viola, violin and mandolin. He has performed with several professional Klezmer groups and has participated in and led many workshops on Klezmer music. Dan appeared with his fiddle in the 2001 CBS miniseries Haven

Active also as a composer, Dan has written and arranged music for string ensembles, Klezmer groups, symphony orchestra, jazz band and student musicians at all levels.

The Hot Latkes Klezmer Band made numerous concert and festival appearances and released two recordings. The band performed with several Canadian orchestras in a programme exploring the convergence of Klezmer and classical music.

At Algoma Music Camp Dan teaches violin and viola and directs the senior orchestra. He has also taught at the London Waldorf School as well as String Fever Music Camp in London, the Waterloo Viola camp and the National Academy Orchestra in Hamilton.

Marion Miller began piano at four, was teaching at 12 and entered the University of Western Ontario, with her ARCT performer’s certificate, at 16,
graduating with a Master’s degree inmusic performance and the President’s
Gold Medal for academic excellence. Along time student of John-Paul Bracey,
she went on to study with such musical legends as Ozan Marsh at Chautauqua,
Cecile Genhart in Zurich and Marce l Ciampi in Paris.  She has recorded several CBC concerts of chamber music and been profiled on CBC’s Arts National.
In addition to many years as pianist for Orchestra London, her experience has ranged from swing orchestras, musical theatre and lounge performances to playing with such stars as Mitch Miller, Harry Belafonte and Jann Arden. She has taught at the University of Western Ontario, the Western Ontario Conservatory of Music and the Kincardine Summer Music Festival.  Besides maintaining a large class of private students, ranging from young and adult beginners to university-level aspiring concert performers and other piano teachers, she is also a sought-after accompanist and adjudicator.  With collaborator Clark Bryan, she recently released Rachmaninoff, a recording of the composer’s suites for two pianos.
