Group Profile
Hawkewind Theatre Productions
Hawkewind Theatre Productions was formed to showcase the theatrical talents of directors and actors on Manitoulin Island. The troupe’s first production was Norm Foster’s “The Motor Trade” Christmas 2001 at Abby’s Restaurant on the first nation M’Chigeeng Reserve.
Encouraged by the popularity of that show, in late fall 2002, the group began an ambitious season with nine successful performances of Neil Simon’s “Last Of The Red Hot Lovers”. The zany Christmas Production, “Sorry Wrong Chimney” by Jack Sharkey and Leo W. Sears followed hot on the heels of Neil Simon’s hit. In February 2003, the play “It Had To Be You”, directed by David Edwards, and starring John Hawke and Deborah Wilson, both well known Sault actors, thoroughly delighted its audiences, some members of whom travelled over a hundred kilometers to see the show. In May 2003, a special holdover production was staged for the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities’ conference, attended by mayors and representatives from across the north.
This enthusiastic response of that audience led to the group’s considering travelling across Northern Ontario with the show, and tying it to a fund raising event in each community.
