ARTIST PROFILE
Doug Hook
A Northern Ontario artist who calls St. Joseph Island home, prolific artist Doug Hook has been painting off and on since the age of five. After studying under Toronto's John Joy and Zoltan Szabo in Sault Ste. Marie, Doug has been a full-time painter since 1971.
Having spent summers as a young boy at Six Mile Lake in
Muskoka, it was then that he developed a love and a passion for
the northern areas of Ontario. Amongst his favourite subjects
are beautiful northern scenes - northern landscapes, rural scenes,
and wildflowers - that reveal an exquisite sense of colour and form.
One critic has described his paintings as
| Doug Hook has paintings in corporate and private collections throughout the world. These include the collections of William Davis, David Peterson, and the late Pierre Trudeau. Among his many other accomplishments, Doug had the honour of a private audience with His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Doug has also had the opportunity to present one of his paintings to the Prince which is now part of his permanent collection. |
Every year, Doug Hook hosts his Annual Summer Show and Art Exhibition at the Town Hall in Richard's Landing. It is during these displays that you will find an assortment of original watercolour paintings, limited edition reproductions, giclee prints, and art cards. The paintings often cover a variety of scenes: landscapes, floral, historical buildings, and animals. He is also well known for his talent for painting provincial and state flowers.
