ARTIST PROFILE

Harry Houston

Harry Houston started in community theatre with the Sault Theatre Workshop in the late sixties as an actor and has been involved non-stop ever since. Currently President of the Sault Theatre Workshop, Harry has held the presidency four times.

As an actor, director, and technician, Harry has worked with just about every theatre group in the Sault. He encouraged a group of youth to start up their own young company, Stage 1, who practice and perform in the Sault Theatre Workshop's Studio theatre. Every Barbershopper in town knows Harry – he has helped write scripts for their shows as well as directing several of them. Harry also served many years on the Board of Directors for the Arts Council of Sault Ste Marie and District, including the position of president.

Harry has also served many terms on the board of directors for the Quonta Drama Region and held the presidency for one term. He served on the board of Theatre Ontario for six years as the Quonta representative, and he was on the Executive Committee for Theatre Ontario. Quonta will be holding its second One Act Workshop Festival in the Sault, under Harry's leadership.

Harry Houston is always one to take advantage of any training opportunity, attending workshops and festivals across the province and bringing the knowledge back to the community. He knows the value of creating opportunities for others!

Harry believes strongly in the importance of communication and has often advocated for group Newsletters. In the seventies, he edited the Theatre Ontario Newsletter (then called Dialog). Through this contact, he met and made many friends around the province. Currently, he has the job of editing the Quonta newsletter QxQ and the newsletter for Sault Theatre Workshop. You can read these publications on line, since they have been added to the web sites created by Harry and his brother George: www.quonta.org and www.SaultTheatre.com.

Harry has donated much time and talent to promoting his love of theatre in the Community.
Thank you, Harry – it is much appreciated!
