ARTIST PROFILE

Johanna Bischoping (1936 - 2003)

The passing of Johanna Bischoping has left the arts community of Sault Ste. Marie a poorer place. Johanna was probably best known for her exquisite lace knit shawls and scarves. Her designs are a masterpiece of mathematics, technical expertise, form, and function The Briggs and Stratton Yarn Company recently published one of her patterns. Her skill was also evident by the numerous awards her work has won, including the Harrlet Black Award and the Ontario Craft Council Design Award.

Johanna was also politically active. She had a strong social conscience and took civic responsibility seriously, as evidenced by her years of work with the New Democratic Party and the Ontario Ombudsman.

Lesser known was Johanna, the patron. She quietly supported, encouraged, and championed other artists. Her generosity touched many people. Her keen understanding of the creative process gave her a unique appreciation for the work of others.

Johanna Bischoping took great pleasure in simple things like her plants, tea with friends, a walk along the Sand River, or a fresh bunch of herbs. She was a good friend to many, and she will be sorely missed.
