ARTIST PROFILE
Doris Anne Ray
Doris started sketching and painting in her teens, but set aside all of this to enter a career of Nursing in London, ON. During this time she managed to sketch only the occasional picture for friends and family. This came to a complete halt after graduating, since work and family and children occupied her time.
It was only after moving to Sault Ste. Marie, she eventually found more time available. Although Doris continues to work as a nurse, her passion for sketching and painting is what inspires her and gives her peace and serenity of spirit and mind. Her first paintings were in oil, but, after trying acrylics, she discovered that it was a more flexible medium for her. As most artists, Doris still did not produce many pictures, and kept all of these hidden away, until 1992. During an amazing experience by way of a dream, Doris began to see life with a new perspective. Her passion and desire for painting persisted. It was still a couple of years before she did any serious work, the first of which was directly related to her dream. Hence, the painting “Spiritual Healing” was a new beginning, for her a beginning of many sketches and paintings.
Doris enjoys sketching and painting portraits, landscapes, animals, and just about anything that inspires her. Doris sees the hand of a loving God in all the beautiful things of life, in landscapes, people and animals, and, it is her hope that this theme is exemplified in her work.
Doris enjoys working with pencils charcoal, and acrylics. She dabbles in the occasional watercolor and pastel. Doris also makes some prints and Art Cards and Bookmarks of her originals.
It is her hope that when viewing her work, that it might inspire a glimpse of the beauty of creation in the viewer.
Being a member of the Arts Council of Sault Ste. Marie and District and Algoma Arts Society, Doris enters many of the local shows including: Art in the Park, the Christmas Market and the Spring and Fall shows of the Algoma Art Society.
