White Pines Onstage
Actually theatre at White Pines has a fairly long tradition. Since the opening of White Pines in 1973, there has been a drama programme. At times, there were Technical Theatre courses as well.
White Pines Onstage owes its creation to the talented Gord Widgett. In fact, it was his wife Marion that came up with the name. Some of the shows Gord directed include, “The Odd Couple”, “Stand and Deliver” and “Remember”. Of course, many know Gord’s stellar work as Director in the Algoma District Board of Education productions of “Les Miserables” and recently, “Cats”.
Gord moved on to be Vice Principal, a post he holds now at Korah, but White Pines Onstage is going strong under the Artistic Direction of Sue Barber. White Pines Onstage has a dedicated classroom with a stage and sound system in White Pines High school proper, and we are delighted to be able to work with Greg Marshall, the Technical Director of the Kiwanis Community Theatre Centre, which is the largest performing arts venue in Northern Ontario. The ’base’ operations of WPO include the yearly Remembrance Day ceremony, a fall show and a spring show. In the past we have presented, “Working”, “Leonardo” (an adaptation of “The Wall”), “Dearly Departed”, “The Grinch”, “Aesop’s Fables”, “Dirty Work at the Crossroads”, “Romeo and Juliet” (adapted), and the in-house written “Tempered Steel”, which we presented as part of the Algoma Fall Festival.
This year, in addition to four classes of Grades 10, 11 and 12 Drama and our Vocal Music and Dance classes, we have added a dedicated Musical Theatre course. Our main stage production will be “Miss Saigon”, which will open on February 5th, 2008. It boasts a cast of over 30 and features technical assistance from some of the top people in the Sault including Sherry Fisher, Bob Cole, Rob Rock, Tasia Gordon, Jeska Rancourt, Greg Marshall, Holly Filice, Phil Routh, Ron Dalcin and Sandi Dalcin.
We continue to follow our mandate, which is “Dream, Create, Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse”. To learn more about White Pines Onstage, or to contact us, visit our web site at http://whitepines.adsb.on.ca.
