GROUP PROFILE
The North Channel Community Singers
There's music in the air along Algoma's North Shore and it has generated a great deal of excitement. That sound you hear is the music of the North Channel Community Singers. Formed in Thessalon, Ontario in September of 2004 by local musicians Loyal & Sara Beggs and Ann Trivers the group gave their first performance that December as part of the readings of the Dickens's classic "A Christmas Carol". The Dickens performance has become an annual event, and they round our their season with a spring performance in late May or early June. Raising their voices in song for the benefit of local communities is a large part of their mandate, and they've proven that they do it well. Thus far they have raised close to $10,000.00 for Algoma Manor and over $3000.00 for the East Algoma Easter Seals along with a number of smaller projects. "The numbers that we are getting out on Tuesdays for rehearsal suggest to me that this is something that many people have been waiting for. We're really filling a void in the area" says music director Loyal Beggs. The choir now numbers over 50 voices and it's still growing. They perform everything from Classical to Jazz and more contemporary music. This year’s project is a gospel and sacred music program which will also feature the Northland Barbershop Chorus and local Bluegrass group "Loose Change". They will start preparations for their spring show in January, and your voice would be a great addition!
