Musical Comedy Guild
The Musical Comedy Guild of Sault Ste. Marie is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to producing the highest possible quality musical theatre entertainment for the community-at-large while at the same time providing both a training ground and a showcase for the artistic and cultural community of the Algoma region.
The Musical Comedy Guild was organized in June of 1962 with its first Executive being elected in September of that same year. Under President Mary Jamieson, the Guild presented its first season, consisting of a spring show ("H.M.S. Pinafore") and a fall show ("The Mikado"), a tradition which it would carry on for the next 45 years. To date, the Musical Comedy Guild has produced more than 80 productions and shows no signs of slowing down.
This past year was a very successful one with the staging of Pirates of Penzance in June 2007 under the direction of Timothy Murphy. This was the Guild’s first Gilbert and Sullivan production in many years and it was enthusiastically received by all those in attendance. In November 2007, Oliver was brought to the stage under the direction of our own native son, Clinton Walker. The last time the Guild staged this production was in 1976 when Timothy Murphy played the role of Oliver.
The last General Annual Meeting for the Guild was held this past January. A new slate of officers to the Board of Directors was elected and they are:
President - Terri Miller
Past President - Lesley Walsh-Tibben
1st Vice President (Properties) – Christine Mozarowski
2nd Vice President (Publicity) - Darla Pirillo
Business Manager - Vernon Bailey
Book-keeper – Linda Holmes
Librarian - Timothy Murphy
Membership Secretary – Carly Ribic
Executive Secretary – Brenda Rooney
Treasurer – David Cook
Arts Council Representative – David Walsh
Auditor – Michael Plastino
The new Board is looking forward to the next musical to be brought to the stage which will be Pippin. This show will also be under the Direction of Timothy Murphy with Musical Direction by Susan Barber.
